Livia Firth and Her “Green” Fashion Statement

Well, Natalie Portman was not the only celebrity to go green at the 2011 Oscars. It seems Academy-award winner Colin Firth’s wife, Livia, was clad in an eco-friendly evening dress and jewels for the Oscar event.

Livia Firth, wife of widely nominated The King's Speech actor Colin Firth and creative director of Eco Age, is on a quest to wear sustainable and green fashions on the red carpet throughout the film industry's gruelling awards season.

At The King's Speech New York City premiere, Lady Firth sparkled in jewels crafted from recycled gold and conflict-free diamonds, and at the Golden Globes, she wore a hand-dyed indigo vegan silk evening dress.

For the Oscars, her "green" fashion statement will showcase the artistry of the recycle.

South-East London designer Gary Harvey has created a gown for Firth made from 11 different dresses sourced from vintage shops. On her blog, Livia crowns Gary the "king of reuse."

According to the blog, every element of the dress "including zips, corsetry and the original toiles—is recycled," and came from the era of The King's Speech.

The dress as a whole will be an Oscar-night surprise, but TakePart can reveal that the various pieces came from vintage boutiques and cancer research thrift shops.

Also, there will be a corset, and the dress makes Firth feel like Cinderella.

As for jewels, she tweeted she will be adorned with the "the first EVER Fairtrade gold in the world at the Oscars!!!"

Gary Harvey made his name in the world of sustainable fashion. Here are some of the recycled designs that built his reputation.
